Avril Lavigne posted an in-studio photo with Machine Gun Kelly and Mod Sun on Tuesday (Dec. 29), sparking speculation that the trio are cooking up new music.

Actually, forget speculation. Avril captioned their Instagram snap: “So are we ready for new music in the new year or what? Lemme know…..[lightning bolt emoji].”

In the pic, Lavigne is standing sideways in a black sweatshirt and camo pants and winking at the camera, while MGK rocks grey sweats and a pink hoodie while flashing metal horns and sticking his tongue. Mod chills right next to him in an all-yellow outfit accented by green hair.

The series of shots includes images of MGK strumming an electric guitar as Lavigne looks on from the couch with a notebook in her lap and Mod shoots video while lying on the floor.

Additional pics show Kelly recording vocals as Lavigne hangs in the background and Lavigne at the mic taking encouragement from the Tickets to My Downfall rap-rocker, whose recent album found him delving into the kind of pop-punk Lavigne has made her signature for more than two decades.

Earlier this month, Lavigne posted a video of her taking a spin on a new pink custom motorcycle that included an update about the sessions for the follow-up to her emotional 2019 album Head Above Water. In addition to riding around, she also included images from her earlier studio sessions with Mod Sun and album producer/Goldfinger singer/guitarist John Feldman, who has also produced recent songs and records by Good Charlotte, Blink-182, 311, Ashley Tisdale and Korn.

The Lavigne/MGK mind-meld is not as strange as it might seem; back in March, MGK posted a video where he played a bit of Avril’s signature 2002 breakthrough hit “Sk8er Boi’ on guitar, just months after the apparent pals were photographed hanging out with We The Kings singer Travis Clark.
