Halsey has heard all the misconceptions about her pregnancy and relationship with the baby’s father, Alev Aydin, but she set the record straight in her new Allure cover story.
When the singer announced her pregnancy in late January and tagged the screenwriter on her baby bump, fans were unfamiliar with Aydin. In March, Halsey shut down any rumors about her pregnancy and told her 25 million Instagram followers that it was “100% planned, and I tried very hard for this bb.” Now she’s letting everyone know that she and Aydin knew each other for many years before they started dating in private.
“Alev and I have been really good friends for four years. And when the stars aligned, our relationship became romantic and it was pretty evident that he and I were both like, ‘Oh, my gosh! You’re the person I’m supposed to start a family with,'” she said in the new interview. “Nobody knew I was dating someone. As if people were entitled to an update, like, ‘I’ve met someone, we’re going on dates, it’s getting serious, they’ve moved in, we’re planning a child, we are having a baby, we had a baby, this is the gender….'”
Aydin was tapped to write the movie about Halsey’s life that was announced in 2018, and Halsey recently broke down the rom-com-worthy reason the biopic has been postponed to an inquiring Twitter follower. “Bc alev was supposed to be writing it the past 3 years and we slowly fell in love instead. you know the rest!” she tweeted back in May.
While the movie about her life is still on hold, Halsey is living out her happily ever after in real life. But there were roadblocks along the way — a major one being the Grammy-nominated, multiplatinum-selling singer’s fame. “I signed up to give my whole life away; my loved ones didn’t,” she explained to Allure. But she recalled one night that was like a “movie scene” when she felt like the constant attention around her might have been too much for the filmmaker.
“Part of the reason it took Alev and I so long to start dating was because I liked him so much,” she added. “He was writing a movie about my life, a biopic, so we spent a lot of time together. One night we went somewhere really public together. As we were leaving, I got swallowed by a mob of paparazzi and fans and people wanting me to sign vinyls and whatever else. It was all very dramatic, like a movie scene. I looked over my shoulder and he’s being pushed away from the mob and I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I didn’t even say goodbye!’ I remember sitting in the car and being like, ‘I can never see him again. I like him too much to ruin his life and drag him into all this craziness.’ He swiftly reminded me I was being super melodramatic and he was like, ‘I don’t care. It’s not that big of a deal.'”
While he didn’t mind navigating life in the spotlight as a couple, Halsey wonders how they’ll navigate the multicultural identity of their baby, something Gigi Hadid said in another interview that she and Zayn are dealing with regarding their baby daughter Khai. Halsey, who is biracial, opened up to the magazine about being “white passing” and the struggles she and her mixed family have had to deal with, including microaggressions.
“My little brother’s name is Sevian. He’s brown, not phenotypically Black; he just looks like a light-skin, mixed guy. He and I were having a conversation about microaggressions, and he was like, ‘In high school they used to call me Slavian,'” she recalled. “It puts people in a position of comfort because he’s not Black enough that they recognize the wrong, but he’s also not white, so the joke exists, right?”
When it comes to Halsey’s child’s understanding of their multiethnic identity, the pop star said she’s facing another set of challenges. “I’m biracial, Alev is Middle Eastern, and our child is going to have a Black grandfather and a Turkish grandfather — there’s Christmas and there’s Ramadan,” Halsey explained. “They’re going to grow up in this kind of multicultural home and I have new challenges because of that.”
