Where does Olivia Rodrigo get the confidence for her super personal songwriting? From Cardi B.
The “Drivers License” breakout star, who’s currently prepping her highly anticipated debut album, already knows how to transform a “really painful moment” into a record-breaking Billboard Hot 100-topping heartbreak anthem. Cardi gave the song a co-sign — while accepting Rodrigo’s invitation to go get McDonald’s and pick up Happy Meals — and in a new Apple Music interview, the 18-year-old hitmaker is returning the love right back.
“I’m so in love with her, I want to marry her,” she told Lowe while referencing “Get Up 10,” the opening song from Cardi’s Grammy-winning rap album Invasion of Privacy. “One of the lyrics is like, ‘Real bi—, only thing fake is boobs.’ And I was like, ‘Yes, that’s the energy.’ I’m obsessed with her. I love Invasion of Privacy.”
Cardi called Rodrigo “such a sweetie pie” when the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series actress named “Get Up 10” as “her favorite rap song ever” in an Instagram Live Q&A session. “I can’t wait to see what she have coming next !” the 28-year-old rapper wrote on Twitter.

Rodrigo congratulated Cardi for her latest single “Up” hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 last month shortly after her 2021 Grammy Awards performance, saying she felt “so stoked for her” and “literally almost cried” when she saw the good news. But when it comes to how “shockingly honest” the brazen Bronx rapper is in her music, the “Deja Vu” singer is jotting down notes ahead of releasing her debut album Sour in May.
“I feel lucky to be a teenager at the time when Cardi is making music. … Just even as a songwriter, some of the stuff that she says is just so honest and almost like shockingly honest. When I listened to her song, I’m like, ‘Oh wow, she really just said that on a recorded album.’ Those are my favorite artists who say stuff that other people are scared to say,” she continued. “So I think she does that so well. That’s definitely something that I sort of grapple with in my songwriting. I’m making a lot of music right now to put it out, and I listen to it back and I’m terrified sometimes. I’m like, ‘Oh my God. I literally am writing about stuff that I don’t tell some of my closest friends, and I’m going to put out for the whole world to scrutinize and talk about.’ …. It’s a really horrible, terrifying thing. … She gives me courage to sort of say whatever I want to say and be honest in telling my story.
