Gorillaz returned on Thursday (April 9) with the third track in their Song Machine series, the message is spot-on for this socially-distanced age.
“Aries” features former New Order co-founder/bassist Peter Hook and U.K. pop singer Georgia playing drums on a beat-infused track with lyrics about the search for some human connection in a disconnected world.
“I’m standing on a beach in the distance/ Even though you’re far away/ Can you see my red light/ It’s waiting to turn green,” singer Damon Albarn croons over a classic, bouncing New Order-style bass thump and banging beat. “‘Cause I feel so isolated without you/ I can’t play a happy tune on my own, so stay by my side/ High or low tide.”
The animated video continues the adventures of Gorillaz members 2D, Noodle and Russel, who left Murdoc behind in the previous clip for “Désolé,” featuring Fatoumata Diawara. After sending him into the voice, they pick their bandmate up again for a wild motorcycle trip thanks to an injected mystery substance. In this period where we’re all keeping our distance, the group has also launched a new virtual meeting space called G Club, which has racked up 10,000 members to date.
