Mark Ronson has famously worked with a who’s who of big-voiced female artists — from Lady Gaga on Joanne and A Star Is Born to Dua Lipa on Silk City’s “Electricity” to Amy Winehouse on her breakthrough Back to Black album — and on Thursday (Nov. 29), he added a new powerful female voice to his ranks: Miley Cyrus.
Mark and Miley teamed up for the brand-new song and video “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” — Cyrus’ first music since her 2017 Younger Now album and the first track under Ronson’s name since his 2015 album Uptown Special, which included the unstoppable Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper and 2016 Grammy record of the Year “Uptown Funk!,” featuring Bruno Mars.
The song pays homage to Cyrus’ Nashville roots, with her twangy vocals front and center on her very own disco “Jolene” (fittingly enough, given Miley’s godmother is none other than Dolly Parton). In the accompanying video, Cyrus leads cops on a high-speed chase through the city, along streets lined with Smilers holding “We Are Miley” signs and writing “Miley for President” up and down their arms.
In an interview earlier this week, Ronson told the BBC that his upcoming album, which will include “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart,” is full of “sad bangers.” “It doesn’t always have to be depressing,” he said. “I tried doing some other music, whatever I could do not to relive ‘Uptown Funk,’ but the only stuff that started to stick was the stuff that moved me and made me feel melancholy.”
