Despite her demanding schedule as she gets ready to travel internationally for the Grand National Tour with Kendrick Lamar, SZA found time to record with Lizzo.
In a series of Instagram Story posts shared early on Friday, June 20, SZA hinted at a new project featuring both of them. The video began by highlighting Lizzo’s latest music, then shifted to snippets of SZA’s vocals blending with Lizzo’s in the background. “Working on a guest star for bookie @lizzobeeating’s new mixtape,” SZA captioned one of the clips, and in another she described the session as a “lil after-dinner session.”
Back in March, Lizzo shared that she had officially “done” preparing her new album Love in Real Life, and mentioned that she “got an emergency root canal, announced SNL & finished my album all in one day.” Although SZA referred to a “mixtape” in her post, it’s uncertain whether she meant Love in Real Life, as the album still doesn’t have a confirmed release date.
Earlier this week, during a conversation with Chappell Roan for Interview Magazine, SZA spoke about her friendship with Lizzo. She described their first meeting as “organic and very random.” Reflecting on the moment, SZA recalled: “One day, we were on the same tour, and I was like, ‘We’re about to drive out to Lake Michigan, do you want to come?’ And she was like, ‘Yeah, let’s go.’ And then we just got drunk and hung out, and we kept doing that, and then our lives and careers progressed, and we kept talking and hanging out.”
This upcoming release won’t be their first time collaborating. In 2023, SZA was featured on a reworked version of Lizzo’s 2022 single “Special.” Then in May, during a tour stop in Los Angeles, Lizzo joined SZA on stage to perform the song together.
This update follows the conclusion of the North American leg of the Grand National Tour, co-headlined by SZA and Kendrick Lamar. Beginning in July, their European shows will span cities like Paris, London, Barcelona, and Rome, before ending the tour with performances in Australia this December.
