Colombian-American artist Michael Mejia has reportedly been involved in a car accident shortly after sharing his intention to sell the custom 2022 Lamborghini Urus he won from Shakira in a giveaway.

A video posted on Instagram by the account ¡Siéntese Quien Pueda!, a Spanish reality show, shows the purple Lamborghini damaged in Miami. The footage appears to show Mejia behind the wheel, speaking with authorities about the vehicle, which had a large dent on its side. It remains unclear whether he was injured in the crash, as he has not provided any updates on his social media accounts.

“Michael Mejia, the lucky winner of #Shakira’s customized Lamborghini Urus, valued at $280,000, has been involved in a traffic accident with the luxurious vehicle,” reads the post caption. “Although details of the incident are still scarce, it has been confirmed that Mejia was unharmed. The Lamborghini Urus, known for its distinctive purple color and exclusive design, was delivered to Mejia in December 2024 after winning the contest organized by the singer. We will continue to report as more details about this unexpected event become known.”

In a recent interview with Univision’s El Gordo y la Flaca, Mejia discussed winning the car from Shakira and explained that he plans to sell it for $1 million due to the high maintenance costs. Shakira also gifted him an additional $90,000 to help with expenses, such as taxes, title transfer fees, legal costs, and six months of insurance payments.

“I didn’t expect car insurance to cost $2,000 a month, and that’s how much it is. With the money she gave me, the car will be sustained for a while, but it’s still very expensive to maintain,” he shared. “Someone offered me, believe it or not, between 700 and 800,000 dollars. That’s wonderful, but a lot of people are telling me ‘Don’t sell it for less than one [million].’”

When Shakira first announced the giveaway, she described the purple Lamborghini as “a gift to myself as I began my single life,” though she later came to realize that “material things” are not as valuable as “the people we love and the connections we build.”
