Yuti Chang – Cobi
Minnesota native Cobi is reaching for new heights and feelings on his latest EP Songs From The Ashes (PT. 2), available exclusively on Billboard today (Sept. 20). Following the first installment from late 2017, Ashes (PT. 2) expands from the impressive introductory vocal showcase with broad strokes via new instrumentation and charged and refined lyricism.
“Music has always been a vehicle for protest and this three-song EP touches on my feelings of loneliness in America, violence, and everlasting love,” Cobi tells Billboard. “It’s also an homage to the music I love from the 70s: Rock, Reggae and Soul.”
The EP instantly jumps into new territory with the jolting “Church Of The Lonely,” which builds on Cobi’s powerhouse vocals with synth flourishes and a searing electric guitar that weaves itself throughout the rest of the set. Cobi crafts an anthemic protest song on the second track, “Burnin’ One Down,” before giving a nourishing dose of life-affirming soul on closer “Rising Phoenix.”
Ashes (PT. 2) arrives on Friday (Sept. 21) via 300 Entertainment.
